So it’s been about a year since I posted, but felt it was only necessary that I leave one last post on city mouse goes midwest before I leave the midwest.
I didn’t think I’d be leaving just yet. Things have been good. I adopted Murray, my adorably neurtotic pup a bit over a year ago. I decided to leave my NY priced apartment downtown for the first level of a duplex in S.Minneapolis. In the midst of trying to find a place to move I met David (he showed me an apartment he manages for a friend). He was persistent and would not let me say no to a date and now 10 months later we are moving to San Francisco.
There is obviously more to the story. I had come to terms with the fact that my job wasn’t the right fit for me. The plan was that I’d start looking in about a year from now. My lease would be up in June & David & I would move in together. He (a midwest native) too was antsy for a change. We figured one more year here and then we’d move on. Where to? We were not sure, but with a year to figure it out we had plenty of time.
Out of the blue I got an email from a company that I’ve worked with for almost my entire career. They had a position open up and thought of me. There were no catches and it’s a company I have for years admired. In the back of my mind they’d always been a dream of mine, but with San Fran being so far from NY it just didn’t seem like a possibility.
David & I spoke about the opportunity and he was 100% supportive. It all happened really quickly and I start April 8th. I leave this Saturday with my Dad & Murray on the 30 hour ride. We plan to hit up the Badlands, Mt.Rushmore, & Lake Tahoe along the way. Being that this happened all so quickly I found a sublet for the month of April. I will start work and find a place that is suitable for 2 dogs & 2 adults. David will head out at the end of the month and look for work. Lucky for me my friend Catherine will be in SF for work my first week there and my third week will be my Cousin Anna’s bridal shower (she is getting married in SF in October). So I already have some social things going on as soon as I get in.
While I expect my East Coast trips will be less (I’ve been home a total of 12 times in 21 months), I expect that I will have a better chance of visitors coming to see me (or realistically the city or napa). Please know you are all welcome so long as you are OK sharing a bed with Murray & Rickey.
Minnesota was good to me. It got me out of NY which was a change I so needed. I miss my friends, family, & familiarities, but I like the adventure of this all. It only took me 31 years to get out of my comfort zone and I am looking forward to what the next 31 have in store.
P.S.- The adventure will continue! Check out http://citymousegoesfurtherwest.tumblr.com/ to follow my dad & I on our roadtrip.
